Pete Skimming

Shot by Lou Kiddier

Pete Martin is an adman, writer/director, sometime skimmer.

Ah, Loch Lomond as the sun sets in Scottish spring. Really about as far from the Mars Bar at the bottom of 2nd Avenue in the heat of a New York summer noon as you can get. And here am I skimming.

Bouncing stones off water is a bit like creativity, I find. Ideas felt easy when you were younger. But by now, surely all the best stones have been chucked into the loch already? And, you know, compared to the smooth, rounded, perfect disk-shaped pebbles of my boyhood, sending these small, unkempt rocks plummeting – without a single Bomber Harris rebound – into the dark, all-forgetting waters does not fill the heart with joy.

Is the material to hand at fault? Or have you simply lost your touch?

What am I thinking right now?

Like the loch itself, this space is simply somewhere deep and dark to chuck the unpolished chunks of my mental precipitations. Otherwise they go round in my mind and I can’t sleep. And what am I thinking about? Creativity. Scotland. Ideas. Writing. Advertising. Film. Technology. The economy. Stuff, mostly. Sometimes nothing.

Pete is not in right now. Leave a message, willya?
